the problem
Fathom is an AI notetaker app for video meetings that quickly rose to the top of G2 as the number one rated AI meeting assistant as one of the first to market. By 2024 numerous competitors had risen and Fathom was seeking to evolve the v1.0 of the call summary screen into a more feature-rich and user friendly application. Dreamten designed a new version of this screen, and I was tasked with testing prototypes with users to ensure functions were clear in the application.

the process
This study had two rounds of five user interviews for a total of 10 calls with Fathom users of all levels. Doing two separate rounds allowed Dreamten to make changes to the prototype based on round one, and test these changes with brand new users in round two. I wrote a mod guide including high level demographic questions, specific tasks for the user to complete, and detailed reflection questions. In the interview I observed user behavior to assess the usability of the prototype, and enquired about their thoughts and actions.
the results
I analyzed and assembled the data collected into a comprehensive slideshow presentation, designed to fit the Dreamten brand. The slideshow included major insights with details on each pain point, both positive and constructive quote slides to break up the information, and a findings matrix assessing the importance and ease-of-implementation for each suggested update to the Fathom call screen UI.
To the left are a few key slides from the presentation of the first round of five users.
study feedback
This video is from the end of the research presentation (the slides above) including Fathom CEO Richard White's feedback on the user study process. Philip Lester, the founder of Dreamten, and Jason Schmitt, a Dreamten partner are also featured.
